Consisting of two Confederate military documents re supplies and news of Confederate surrender. Pass, 22 Feb. 1865, signed by S.S. Kirkland, allowing Jones to accompany a crate northbound from Greensboro, N.C., to Danville, Va., via the Piedmont Railroad Company, and from Danville to Burkeville, Va., via the Richmond and Danville Railroad. Handwritten contemporary copy, 11 Apr. 1865, of R.E. Lee's General Order No. 9, issued 10 Apr. 1865, announcing the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia; and a pass issued by Brig. Gen. M[artin] W[itherspoon] Gary, Also including pass written after date of official Confederate surrender, dated 20 Apr. 1865, "H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs Gary's Cavalry Brigade," signed by Brig. Gen. M[artin] W[itherspoon] Gary consisting of an order detailing privates Jones and J.W. Steel "to their homes to York District," S.C., for 10 days to procure horses after which they would "reform the Brigade."
